Bear Hole and Pickford’s Brow

SAM_1086

To start this trail head up the right-hand slope, Pickford’s, to its junction with St Peter’s Square.
If you prefer steps you can ascend via Pickford’s Brow Steps from further along Chestergate.

This is an excellent spot to really appreciate the multi-level nature of Stockport with the convergence of the 2 brows, Chestergate at the bottom, High Bank Side at the top and the bridge overhead leading to the Merseyway car park.

In-between these two brows is an exposed section of the sandstone cliffs on which the town is built.

SAM_1084Bear Hole Brow is supposedly so named as it was here where the poor bear used for bear-baiting lived in a cave cut into the cliff.

Once at the top turn of Pickford’s Brow turn first left onto Step 2: High Bank Side that runs along the top of the cliff you were just under for the next part of The Brow Circuit. Be careful not to miss the turn and go onto St Peter’s Square!
